The Alkaline Diet and Hydrogen Water

Let’s talk about the Alkaline Diet.  The ideal blood pH – the optimum acid/alkaline balance – is between 7.35 and 7.45. The theory behind the Alkaline Diet is that to optimize your overall health, you need to consume more alkaline foods than acidic ones, to help maintain a slightly alkaline –and therefore healthful – state.

Let’s look at that a little more closely.

What is the Alkaline Diet?

The Alkaline Diet is all about how our bodies metabolize food. When we ‘burn’ food to make energy, a chemical residue remains. Some foods leave an alkaline ‘ash’ and other foods leave an acidic one. The philosophy behind the Alkaline Diet is that acidic ash causes your blood to become acidic, and alkaline ash vice versa.

The final part of the picture is that proponents of the Alkaline Diet believe that a body that is too acidic is more prone to illness and cannot thrive in full health.

What can I eat on the Alkaline Diet?

The Alkaline Diet is pretty strict, but depending on how you approach it (and whether you’re a whiz in the kitchen), there are many tasty dishes that you can rustle up with the green-lit foods.

You can enjoy:

  • Most fruit and vegetables
  • Tofu
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Legumes including lentils
  • Oils (Olive, avocado, nut etc)

What you need to avoid on the Alkaline Diet probably won’t surprise you: dairy, meat, convenience and processed foods, alcohol, and coffee are all off-limits. In many versions of the Alkaline Diet, eggs and grains are also discouraged.

How many carbs or calories can I have per day on the Alkaline Diet?

Most people don’t need to count carbs or calories in order to lose weight if they follow the Alkaline Diet to the letter. With most ‘bad’ foods simply out of bounds on the Alkaline Diet, counting carbs or calories seems almost like overkill.

What do doctors and experts say about the Alkaline Diet?

The diet was originally conceived to help manage certain conditions – supporting healthy kidney function for one – and there is much to be said for eating lots of fruit and vegetables and cutting out processed food and junk.

However, the Royal Osteoporosis Society believes that a diet lacking in dairy raises the risk of mineral deficiency.

What type of water or beverages are best to drink on the Alkaline Diet?

On the Alkaline Diet, quench your thirst with green tea, nut or soya milk, still water (not sparkling – Alkaline Diet fans believe this has an acidifying effect) or vegetable juice.

What role does Alkaline Water play in the Alkaline Diet?

If you’re following the Alkaline Diet, then there’s hardly a better choice of beverage than alkaline water.
